Is Canada Preparing for War?

Global Geopolitics

Canada has made it drastically harder to apply for citizenship. The curious issue is the bottom-line concerning the military. There never was a fast track in Canada if you served in their military. All of a sudden, they are now creating a fast track if you serve in the military after increasing the time requirement by 50%. Canada never beefed up its military. This is clearly a total change in direction.

Largest Triangle inside a Curvilinear Triangle

Samuel Prime

RegionUnderCircleIn the diagram shown we have part of a circle of radius $latex R$ whose center is at the point $latex (R,R)$ and which is tangent to the x and y axes — though the graph is drawn for R = 2, we want to work with general R.

Our focus is on the region under the circle above the x-axis. The question is: what is the maximum area that a triangle inside this region can have?

It may occur to you that there is a reasonable `quick’ answer, but the point of the problem is to reason it out carefully so you more or less have a proof that you do indeed get a maximum area. Since the region is concave, the vertices of a triangle cannot be so that one is too close to the far right while another vertex close to the far top left (or else…

Credit Market Warning

Global Geopolitics

There are large signs of stress now present in the credit markets. You might not know it from today’s multi-generationally low interest rates, but other key measures such as liquidity and volatility are flashing worrying signs.

Look, we all know that this centrally planned experiment forcing financial assets ever higher is simply fostering multiple bubbles, each in search of a pin. As all bubbles do, they are going to end with bang.

I keep my eyes on the credit markets because that’s where the real trouble is brewing.

‘It’s time to hold physical cash,’ says one of Britain’s most senior fund managers

Global Geopolitics

It may be time to money under the mattress. High profile fund managers explain how to prepare for a ‘systemic event’

The manager of one of Britain’s biggest bond funds has urged investors to keep cash under the mattress.

Ian Spreadbury, who invests more than £4bn of investors’ money across a handful of bond funds for Fidelity, including the flagship Moneybuilder Income fund, is concerned that a “systemic event” could rock markets, possibly similar in magnitude to the financial crisis of 2008, which began in Britain with a run on Northern Rock.

“Systemic risk is in the system and as an investor you have to be aware of that,” he told Telegraph Money.

Minor Moves: Mychal Givens, Kameron Loe

Azsports73's Blog

Here are today?s minor moves from around the league.

  • The Orioles have announced that they?ve selected the contract of righty Mychal Givens. In addition, the Orioles activated Kevin Gausman (shoulder tendinitis from the 15-day DL, optioned righties Tyler Wilson and Mike Wright to Triple-A Norfolk, and transferred righty Jason Garcia (also with shoulder tendinitis) to the 60-day DL. The Orioles drafted Givens in the second round in 2009 as an infielder, but he transitioned to pitching for the 2013 season. He struggled with control during his first two seasons on the mound (perhaps understandably, given his background), but he?s blossomed in the Double-A Bowie bullpen this season, posting a 1.60 ERA, 12.4 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9 in 39 1/3 innings there.
  • The Bridgeport Bluefish of the independent Atlantic League have announced that they?ve signed righty Kameron Loe. The 33-year-old pitched for three Triple-A teams in 2014, posting a…
