What’s your favourite word?  I have an affinity for words that end in K (only ones suitable for polite company, though!).  For years one of my favourite words has been ‘lurk’.  I’m also fond of ‘ilk’, which is used in the phrase ‘of that ilk’ to mean ‘type’ or ‘sort’. This sense apparently arose out of a misunderstanding of the earlier Scottish use in the phrase of that ilk, where it means ‘of the same name or place’.”

Recently I used the word ‘hae’ in a Wordscraper game, which led to “Coming through the Rye” lodging in my brain, because “Ilka lassie hae her laddie”. Ilka is a middle English word meaning each one. Ilka is also a Greek name meaning light.  I’m not likely to use ‘ilka’ in everyday speech, but I’ll keep on using ‘ilk’ and lurk’.
